Seventeen volunteers from Flint Hills Resources recently paddled the Wapsipinicon River, picking up trash and helping to protect and restore one of Iowa’s vital natural resources during the 13th annual Project A.W.A.R.E. The event, which was presented by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, brought together volunteers from all over the state and region for a five day, 64-mile trek down the Wapsipinicon River. This is the fourth year Flint Hills Resources has supported the environmental cleanup effort which stands for “A Watershed Awareness River Expedition.” According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, a total of 2.75 tons of trash (5,500 lbs.) was removed from the river during the five day cleanup effort including 677 tires, 14.56 tons (29,120 lbs.) of scrap metal, 2.24 tons (4,476 lbs.) of recyclable material (cardboard, glass, plastic) and 0.1 tons (200 lbs.) of household hazardous waste.
