Flint Hills Resources, LLC companies have earned 57 local-, state- and nationallevel awards for compliance and safety and environmental excellence for 2009 performance.
“Flint Hills Resources has a long-standing commitment to working safely and reducing emissions and conserving energy, water and other resources,” said Brad Razook, president and chief executive officer of Flint Hills Resources. “In fact, our refineries decreased emissions of commonly regulated substances by 17 percent from 2008.
“We strive for continuous improvement in our operations and work to achieve 100 percent compliance,” Razook said. “I am proud of the dedication of our employees as we work to produce quality products desired by our customers.”
Flint Hills Resources’ commitment to compliance in all areas has resulted in the company’s third consecutive honor as one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” designated by the Ethisphere Institute. The honor reflects the company’s “outstanding commitment to ethical leadership, compliance practices and corporate social responsibility.”
The company’s liquid fuels terminals earned the industry’s highest accolade: the Platinum Award from the International Liquid Terminals Association. This award, the company’s second in three years, reflects outstanding safety and health performance as employees move FHR refined products from the terminals to customers.
The company’s Minnesota refinery has completed more than 10 years without exceeding its water permit at the wastewater treatment plant. This feat has been honored with awards from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
Flint Hills Resources sites earned a number of safety awards. The company’s overall OSHA recordable incident rate for 2009 is 0.59, while the industry average is 5.0; for lost-time incidents – those resulting in time away from work, the Flint Hills average is 0.11 compared to the industry’s 1.2 rate.
Not only is personal safety data compiled at Flint Hills, but also the company has developed systems to track process safety performance. Tracking and improving this performance is vitally important in preventing process safety incidents such as unintentional releases, uncontrolled reactions, fires or releases of energy.
These honors recognize Flint Hills Resources’ sites and employees for their achievements to operate plants responsibly; implement technologies to cut emissions and conserve energy, water and other resources; and manufacture customer-preferred products.
