Fourteen Iowa and Nebraska seniors were awarded Discovery Scholarships from Flint Hills Resources for their outstanding achievements inside and outside the classroom. This is the second year Flint Hills has provided scholarships to students in Iowa and the first for students in Nebraska where the company recently acquired an ethanol plant.
The scholarships are awarded to students intending to pursue post-secondary education in math, science, technology, engineering, agriculture or related fields. The recipients were chosen based on demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and entrepreneurial excellence.
“We are so pleased to support these exceptional students,” said Sheryl Corrigan, senior vice president of renewables operations at Flint Hills Resources. “They have challenged themselves both academically and personally and have demonstrated a commitment to continued learning and development. These students are truly the best and brightest, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

Hannah actively participated in numerous clubs, teams, organizations and community service projects throughout her high school career. Her activities included studio dance, concert and show choir, marching and concert band, Future Farmers of America, Rotary Club and the National Honor Society attaining the office of secretary. She was also a national qualifier in the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) in hospitality and tourism. In the fall, Hannah plans to attend the University of Iowa majoring in pharmacy.
Kyle DeVoe, Wapsie Valley Jr./Sr. High School
Fairbank, Iowa
Growing up on his family’s farm, Kyle developed an interest in agriculture early on. He plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall majoring in an agriculture-related field. Kyle says he hopes to one day be a leader in his community and the agriculture industry.

Morgan graduated fifth in her class at Friend Public School with a 3.67 GPA. She grew up in Friend where her father, Larry, farms and her mother, Kathleen, lectures in business at Doane College. Morgan plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall and major in animal science.
Brooklyn Swantek, McCool Junction Public School
McCool Junction, Neb.
Brooklyn epitomizes academic and entrepreneurial excellence. During her senior year she was president of the National Honor Society, captain of the basketball and cross country teams, student council president, and participated in a number of other activities including Future Farmers of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and track. Brooklyn plans to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University in the fall majoring in biology.
Sally Moore, Fillmore Central High School

Sally graduated valedictorian of her class with a 4.0 GPA. During school she participated in several activities and served as the president of the Nebraska State Future Business Leaders of America. In the fall, Sally will attend Creighton University majoring in biochemistry.

Andrew was very active in high school, participating in football, track, student council, the National Honor Society, peer counseling and acting as a “Best Buddy” to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities through the Best Buddies Iowa program. Andrew will attend Iowa State University in the fall majoring in agricultural engineering.

Nicole Chafa is the daughter of Wade and Lisa Chafa. She plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall and major in agricultural marketing and minor in a foreign language.

Jessica Pieper is the daughter of Kevin and Val Pieper. She plans to attend Southwestern Community College in the fall and study nursing.
Noah Taylor, ADM Senior High School

During his high school career, Noah Taylor earned many academic achievements, including being named to the honor roll, the National Honor Society and student of the month. He also played four years on the football team and participated in the Technology Student Association, Future Farmers of American, 4-H and many other organizations. Noah will be attending Northwest Missouri State University in the fall majoring in agronomy and playing football.
Bryana Muhlbach, Adair-Casey Jr./Sr. High School

Bryana was very active throughout her high school career, playing on the volleyball, softball and drill teams as well as participating in Future Farmers of America. She also worked nights and weekends to help support her family all while maintaining academic excellence. In the fall, Bryana will attend the Des Moines Area Community College where she intends to pursue a degree in accounting.

Brad achieved academic excellence during his years at Nodaway Valley High School. In the fall, he will attend Iowa State University majoring in agricultural engineering. Dan Ehrsam, Nodaway Valley High School Greenfield, Iowa Dan was a top student at Nodaway Valley High School. He plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall and major in biochemistry.

Zachary Bergman, Clarksville High School

Zach’s high school career was marked by his active role in academic and community organizations as well as his participation in a number of sports including football, wrestling, track and baseball. He was president of the National Honor Society and graduated with a 3.55 GPA. Zach plans to attend the University of Iowa in the fall majoring in business. He says he one day hopes to return to Clarksville and open his own business.
Bethany Lehman, Nashua-Plainfield High School

Bethany graduated top of her class from Nashua-Plainfield High School and was very active throughout high school, being involved in basketball, golf and cross country, band, jazz band and chorus, the National Honor Society and the state-qualifying Future Problem Solvers team. She also volunteered her time to support charitable causes including the Red Cross and Feed My Starving Children. Bethany was named homecoming queen and Miss Plainfield 2013. She plans to attend Coe College in the fall majoring in mathematics and environmental studies.
